The concerted efforts to retrofit a Norwegian platform supply vessel with a new gun block and compressor tanks garner positive reviews from REM Offshore.

REM Andes, a platform supply vessel belonging to Norway’s REM Offshore, was redelivered from Tuas Yard on 16 August 2019, after an eight-week retrofitting programme for the installation of a new gun block and compressor compartment. The redelivery marked the successful completion of the second REM vessel to be retrofitted at ST Engineering Marine.

Efficient planning and impeccable workmanship had been critical to the on-time re-delivery of the retrofitted vessel. This required the project team at ST Engineering Marine to work closely with the technical crew from REM Offshore to come up with innovative solutions to varied engineering challenges.

One of the key challenges involved the installation of the gun block and compressors while deck demolition works were being carried out. Careful measures had to be undertaken to ensure that the new gun block could interface seamlessly with the vessel’s existing hydraulic, air and cooling systems.

Another key challenge involved the conversion of the existing cement tank into a compressor compartment. In total, five compressors and their related systems had to be accommodated within the existing compartment. This required a strong understanding of the various sub-components, and an intense background study of the vessel’s structure and system.

Needless to say, safety was paramount, given that the team had to work 24/7 within a confined space with limited lighting and ventilation. Additional safety inspections, daily safety reminders as well as briefings were conducted to ensure a safe and optimal work environment throughout the retrofitting duration.

It was a proud moment for the ST Engineering Marine team when the REM Andes finally set sail from Tuas Yard to fulfil its obligations with its customers. At the christening ceremony for the newly retrofitted vessel, Mr Fredrik Remoy, Chief Executive Officer of REM Offshore, extended his personal appreciation to Mr Ng Sing Chan, Mr Goh Wee Ann, Mr Donald Lim and Mr Chandra, and congratulated ST Engineering Marine for turning around the vessel in 55 days. “It is incredible! I don’t think many yards in the world can do this, and I am really impressed by what the ST Engineering Marine team has achieved,” he said.

In his speech, Mr Ognyan Ivanov, Chief Executive Officer of REM Management, said, “I’d like to commend the team at Tuas Yard for doing a really good job with REM Andes. This is the second time we’ve sent a ship here, and I am impressed by one thing – that ST Engineering Marine delivers! I’m proud that we both share a similar work ethic when it comes to partnerships, because that is the most important fundamental in business.”
