VT Marine, ST Engineering’s US-based unit specialising in the upgrade of drilling rigs, ships, barges and offshore platforms, has been awarded a contract to repair and upgrade the articulated tug barge (ATB) hopper dredge Ellis Island and tug Douglas B. Mackie belonging to North America’s top dredging firm, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD).

The repair works, which commenced in July 2018, included substantial upgrades to the tug’s fender system, cleaning operations for the bottom hull, maintenance and modification of equipment, bulwarks extensions, as well as other minor repairs and fabrications. Additionally, the dredge was dry-docked for hull repairs due to damages sustained during dredging operations.

The contract from GLDD, a repeat customer, attests to VT Marine’s solid reputation for reliable and responsive repair and maintenance services. The strong rapport between GLDD and VT Marine was fostered through diligent and high quality work executed on schedule, coupled with well-coordinated plans by experienced teams able to deliver additional requirements despite short notice.

The Ellis Island and Douglas B. Mackie are currently deployed on the Ship Island reclamation project off the coast of Mississippi.

Ellis Island is the largest hopper dredge in the US, with a carrying capacity of 15,000 cubic yards as at November 2017.
